In a career that spanned nearly seven decades, Peggy Lee recorded a series of hit singles and albums that displayed her gifts as singer, songwriter and arranger, and was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the film, Pete Kelly's Blues.
Significantly, she was a strong woman who called the shots--rare in the music industry of the 1940s and 50s. Her life story is an amazing one, worthy of a novel or film-or a gala CWC concert in February featuring songs she made famous.
The program will highlight Lee's early work, which yielded hits with Benny Goodman like Why Don't You Do Right, and songs she wrote with her husband, guitarist, Dave Barbour, including It's a Good Day, I Don't Know Enough About You, and Mañana (Is Soon Enough For Me).
In the 1950s, she co-wrote songs for Disney's Lady and the Tramp, and launched a series of recordings that embraced popular music styles from the 1920s to the present day-including hits like Fever, and the Grammy-winning Is That All There Is.
Besides songs already mentioned, titles being considered for the February concert include: Golden Earrings, He's a Tramp, Lover, Mr. Wonderful, The Folks Who Live on the Hill, Ain't We Got Fun, When My Sugar Walks Down the Street, (You Gotta Have) Heart, Wish You Were Here, Hey There, Them There Eyes, But Beautiful, Hey Look Me Over, I'm a Woman, The Long and Winding Road, and such delightful rediscoveries as I Lost My Sugar in Salt Lake City, Louisville Lou, A Doodlin' Song and When In Rome (I Do as the Romans Do), among others.
Concert performers include Joe Alkire, Bob Bowen, Gwyneth Bruch, Martha Dickman, Lenore Heinson, Stephen Peithman, Lenore Sebastian, and Peter Shack. Musical Director is LuAnn Higgs.
